The Transmed gas pipeline
Site manager for the laying of the Transmed subsea pipeline (also known as the “Enrico Mattei Pipeline”) for the transport of natural gas between Algeria and Italy through Tunisia. With total length of 2,200 km (1,470 of it in Italy) and its 600 meters of water depth, this pipeline was – at the time – the deepest underwater infrastructure for the transport of natural gas.

Castoro Sei: projects in the United Kingdom, Denmark and the North Sea
As project manager, and later as area and operation general manager, he played several roles in the development of Saipem’s offshore activities. Significant among them was the Danish project to construct a 500-km pipeline system with the use of, amongst others, the Castoro Sei pipelaying ship.

Saipem 7000
Saipem purchased Saipem 7000, the largest, most innovative vessel in the world for the installation of offshore platforms.
Blue Stream
As group executive chairman, he finalized the contract to launch a project, through the use of Saipem 7000, to develop the Blue Stream pipeline to transport natural gas from Russia to Turkey through the Black Sea (transport capacity 16 billion CM/year). One of the salient moments was the crucial passage of Saipem 7000 through Istanbul on 6 August 2011.

ENI, where Stefano Cao was chief operating officer of the exploration & production division, assumed the role of sole operator in the exploration and development of the Kashagan field in the Northern Caspian Sea, which at the time was the largest oil discovery in the previous 30 years.
