Biography

Stefano Cao is an Italian corporate executive with vast experience in the energy and infrastructure sectors.

Since September 2021, he has been serving as Chairman of Gas Plus S.p.A.

Recently, furthermore, Stefano Cao has also been appointed Chief Executive Officer of DRI D’ITALIA S.p.A. (fully controlled by Invitalia Group), a newly established company to assess the feasibility of a pre-reduced production plant for the steel industry in Italy, propose a plant project and, subsequently, build and manage it.

From April 2015 to April 2021, he served as Chief Executive Officer of Saipem S.p.A., Global Solutions Provider and a leader in the engineering, drilling services as well as in the procurement, construction and installation of major projects both offshore and onshore in the energy and infrastructure sectors.

Since July 21st, 2021 he serves as member of the Board of Directors of Acciaierie d’Italia Holding and, since September 9th, 2021, he is being co-opted into the Board of Directors of Gasplus spa while was appointed Chairman of the Company.

He began his career with the ENI group S.p.A. in 1976, initially with Saipem S.p.A. – which he left in 2000 as executive chairman – and subsequently at ENI S.p.A., which he left in 2008 as chief operating officer of the exploration & production division. From 2000 to 2008, the hydrocarbon production of the division increased from 1,200,000 to 1,800,000 boe/day with the opening of new production fields, the acquisition of independent exploration and production companies and the purchase of production assets.

From February 2009 to June 2012, he held the position of managing director and CEO of Sintonia SA, a holding company in the infrastructure sector, established by Edizione Holding, Goldman Sachs Infrastructure Partners, Mediobanca and GIC.

From 2002 to 2006 he also served as chairman of Assomineraria.
