The Transmed gas pipeline
Site manager for the laying of the Transmed subsea pipeline (also known as the “Enrico Mattei Pipeline”) for the transport of natural gas between Algeria and Italy through Tunisia. With total length of 2,200 km (1,470 of it in Italy) and its 600 meters of water depth, this pipeline was – at the time – the deepest underwater infrastructure for the transport of natural gas.

Stefano Cao is an Italian business executive with a well-established track record in the energy and infrastructure sectors
Since September 2021, he has been Chairman of Gas Plus S.p.A.
From February 2022 to August 2025, he was Chief Executive Officer of DRI d’Italia S.p.A. (a company wholly owned by Invitalia Group), established to assess the feasibility of a pre-reduced iron production plant for the steel industry in Italy, develop the project and, in subsequent phases, oversee its construction and operation.
From July 2021 to February 2022, he was a member of the Board of Directors of Acciaierie d’Italia Holding..
From 2015 to 2021, he was Chief Executive Officer of Saipem S.p.A., a global solutions provider and one of the leading companies in engineering, drilling, procurement, construction and installation services for major onshore and offshore projects in the energy and infrastructure sectors.
From 2012 to 2015, he was also a member of the Board of Directors and various committees of Petrofac Ltd.
He began his career with the Eni Group in 1976. At Saipem, he held positions of increasing responsibility, ultimately becoming Chairman and CEO, a role he held until 2000. He subsequently joined Eni S.p.A., where he was General Manager of the Exploration & Production Division: between 2000 and 2008, the Division’s hydrocarbon output grew from around 1.2 to around 1.8 million boe per day, driven by the start-up of new fields, the acquisition of independent E&P companies and of various producing assets.
From February 2009 to June 2012, he was Managing Director and CEO of Sintonia S.A., an infrastructure holding company established as a joint venture between Edizione Holding, Goldman Sachs Infrastructure Partners, Mediobanca and GIC (Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund).
He was also Chairman of Assomineraria from 2002 to 2006.
Stefano Cao holds a Master Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He obtained his classical diploma at the T. Mamiani high school in Rome.
